The sudden retirement of tennis player Camila Giorgi, revealed on her Instagram page last Sunday, now seems to have an explanation.

According to information from the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Giorgi had left Italy for the United States and is being sought by the Italian police due to discrepancies in her tax declarations. In Italy, the income tax rate can reach 43% for incomes above 75,000 euros annually.

Investigations conducted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Florence indicate that not only Giorgi but her entire family faces significant tax problems. Her father, Sergio, of Argentine origin and longtime coach of the tennis player, and her mother, Claudia, an Italian art teacher from the Marche region, along with brothers Leandro and Amadeus, have never filed the necessary tax declarations.
Following rumors about her retirement, 32-year-old Giorgi confirmed the decision without initially specifying the reasons, through a post on Instagram, where she asked fans to seek true information directly on her profile. “To all my dear fans, I am joyfully announcing my retirement from tennis. I am immensely grateful for the love and support over the years,” Giorgi wrote. She also mentioned that she is excited to share future opportunities and continue her journey with fans.
Since her retirement, Giorgi has severed ties with the Women’s Tennis Association and the Italian Tennis Federation. She is now exploring a career as a model, as reported by the Spanish newspaper Marca. With nearly 750,000 followers on Instagram, Giorgi has been posting photos in lingerie and swimsuits, leveraging her previous experience as a model.
Giorgi reached 26th place in the world tennis singles ranking in 2018 and recently participated in the Miami Open in March, where she was defeated by the world number 1, Iga Swiatek, in the second round.
